Fellow Negrenses, when someone asks you, "From what province are you from?" where do you put Oriental... first or last of
Negros? Confusing, eh? Not sure which is proper or shall I say "correct"? Well, the answer is a bit vague. It's like asking which is
the dominant stripe of zebra... black over white or white over black?
Actually, there is no right or wrong when it comes to its usage. To help clear those question marks above your head, here are some personal
points:
Negros Oriental is (so far) the official name of our great province. Do a map search on the internet, Negros Oriental still
comes at the top over the other one. Register any free web accounts affiliated to Philippines, Negros Oriental is still the
option when asked to select your province. Yes, Negros Oriental is still the "default" name.
As for Oriental Negros, it's usually and instantly correlated with the Tourism drive of our province. In 2004, the provincial
government, iniated by Governor George Arnaiz (now Congressman of 2nd District of the province), passed a resolution to
change the name. This is for the very reason that Negros Oriental is ussually and mistakenly referred to Occidental.
Oriental Negros gradually gain its popularity until "the-return-of-the-come-back" of Governor Emilio Macias. Obviously, he
objects. He firmly believes that the official name of the province should never be changed.
To add one more ball to joggle, he is now promoting the name
"Sidlakang Negros" by placing it on the banner for the upcoming Buglasan celebration... not even sure if it's still called as
such.
In my own opinion, sometimes, change is necessaary to achieve something where everyone
can benefit its results. True, there are pros and cons, but it's too early to conclude.
Personally, I like Oriental Negros better. It sounds distinct and
catchy. Everytime someone utters it, it makes me feel proud to be a Negrense.
Nevertheless, I still use both, and I'm actually making everything simple... Negros Oriental for anything official
and Oriental Negros for any tourism-related stuff.
Now choose... Negros Oriental? Oriental Negros? Sidlakang Negros? well, how about ALAGBAY NEGROS! WAHAHA!
